Summary

After finishing the required training and meeting the police force’s rules, a participant must be sworn in and serve four years with that police force. While serving, the participant has the same rights, duties, and must follow the same rules as other officers, including labor agreements and state and local laws. If the participant is disciplined or laid off in a way that stops them from finishing four years and would cause loss of educational aid under section 12555, the Director may allow the person to finish the obligation by doing an equivalent alternative law enforcement service. If that alternative service is completed, section 12555(d)(1)(B)(iii) will not apply.
