The Secretary of Defense may pay up to $3,000 per year to students who are members of the Senior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps or the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class and who take an approved language immersion program, study abroad, or a college course in a foreign language the Department of Defense calls strategically important. The pay is for the time they are in the language program. If a student does not finish the language program or the ROTC/Platoon Leaders Class requirements, they must repay the money under section 303a(e). The program is run under Defense Department rules, and no payments may be made after December 31, 2018.
