Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 16— - NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION › § 1862o–5
The Director must consider how much a project or award would help meet important national needs. These include innovation, competitiveness, safety and security, the physical and natural sciences, technology, engineering, social sciences, and mathematics. The Director must give priority to projects and to grants paid from the Foundation’s Research and Related Activities fund that are likely to make those kinds of contributions or to boost U.S. competitiveness, innovation, or safety and security. This does not stop the Foundation from funding other research that fits its mission, and it does not change the Foundation’s main purpose.
