§1862p–2 Partnerships for innovation

Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 16— - NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION › § 1862p–2

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

Requires the Director to run a merit-reviewed, competitive grant program to help colleges and universities create or grow partnerships that turn research into real-world uses. To be eligible, a college or university must propose a partnership that includes at least one private company. The partnership can also include other colleges, government groups, businesses, and nonprofits. Grants should give priority to partnerships that include a college and at least one of these: a minority-serving school, a mainly undergraduate school, or a 2-year college. Funded projects must aim to increase research impact through commercialization and knowledge sharing, involve faculty and students across different fields (including business and non‑STEM), teach innovation and entrepreneurship, strengthen campus innovation culture, broaden participation in STEM and innovation, and build lasting local and regional partnerships. The Director must also look for strong institutional support, plans to expand campus-wide if needed, and ways to keep new tools and resources going after the grant. Grant money cannot be used to build or renovate buildings.
