Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 163— - RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, COMPETITION, AND INNOVATION › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER III— - NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE › Part Part C— - Broadening Participation › § 19018
The Director may run several pilot programs inside the Foundation to help more colleges (including community colleges) and other eligible groups compete for Foundation awards. These pilots can include mentoring; help writing award applications; focused outreach to HBCUs, Tribal colleges, and other minority-serving institutions (including HSIs and schools with STEM programs for Native Hawaiians or Alaska Natives); support for groups without experienced award-management offices; more reviewers from schools that have not usually received Foundation funds; and awards increased in term and funding for up to 3 years for first-time principal investigators when paired with mentoring. Pilots must, as appropriate, try to cut administrative burdens for recipients and award staff. Not later than 5 years after August 9, 2022, the Director must review the pilots’ results and develop Foundation-wide best practices to meet the requirement under section 1862(e) of this title.
