Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 20A— - CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION › § 1975b

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

The Commission must have a full-time staff director. The director runs the Commission and is chosen by the President with a majority of the Commission’s support. The Commission may hire other workers under civil service rules and buy outside services, but pay for outside individuals may not exceed the daily equivalent of the maximum GS–15 rate. Members who are not federal employees must be paid the daily share of pay at level IV of the Executive Schedule. Members who are already federal employees get no extra pay but do get travel costs and per diem when away from home under federal travel rules. The Commission cannot use unpaid volunteers, including unpaid members. The Commission can make its own rules, and it will start with the Civil Rights Commission rules that were in effect on September 30, 1994, until it changes them. All federal agencies must fully cooperate with the Commission.
