Summary

The Secretary can give grants or contracts to run public health training centers. These centers must be accredited public health schools or other accredited public or nonprofit institutions that offer graduate or specialized public health training and that work to improve prevention, health promotion, and access to and quality of health care in rural or medically underserved areas. Preference goes to accredited public health schools. To get funding, a center must set up student field placements, involve faculty and students in community projects, serve a specific area away from the school’s main campus, and assess and help train local health workers.
