Defines words used in the chapter so people know what they mean. Director — the Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service (appointed under section 12651c). United States/States — the several States, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and, for subchapter II, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Nonprofit — an agency or organization whose net earnings do not go to private owners or shareholders. Poor or low-income — people whose income is at or below the poverty line in section 625 of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, as amended by Public Law 92–424 (42 U.S.C. 2971d); the Director must consider local poverty guidelines. Public or Federal/State/local agencies — includes Indian tribes, bands, nations, and similar groups (including Alaska Native villages or regional village corporations under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act) that the U.S. or a State recognizes for special programs for Indians. Poverty line for a single individual — set by the Director of the Office of Management and Budget under section 9902(2). Corporation — the Corporation for National and Community Service (established under section 12651). Foster grandparent — a volunteer in the Foster Grandparent Program (part B of subchapter II). Individual with a disability — has the meaning in section 705(20)(B) of title 29, except as provided in section 5057. Inspector General — the Corporation’s Inspector General. National senior volunteer — a volunteer in the National Senior Service Corps (parts A, B, C, and E of subchapter II). Retired and Senior Volunteer Program — the program in part A of subchapter II; a retired or senior volunteer serves in that program. Senior companion — a volunteer in the Senior Companion Program (part C of subchapter II). VISTA / Volunteers in Service to America — the program in part A of subchapter I; a VISTA volunteer serves in VISTA. Authorizing committees — the House Committee on Education and Labor and the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
