The Director of the National Science Foundation must create the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation. The network will upgrade, connect, and combine testing sites across the country for earthquake tests of full-sized buildings, parts of structures, and smaller physical models. The sites must be linked with software and a computer network so researchers can run model-based simulations, share data, access facilities remotely, and work together. The law authorizes these amounts for the network: $28,200,000 for fiscal year 2001; $24,400,000 for fiscal year 2002; $4,500,000 for fiscal year 2003; $17,000,000 for fiscal year 2004; $20,000,000 for fiscal year 2005 (all available for operations and maintenance); $20,400,000 for fiscal year 2006 (all available for operations and maintenance); $20,870,000 for fiscal year 2007 (all available for operations and maintenance); $21,390,000 for fiscal year 2008 (all available for operations and maintenance); and $21,930,000 for fiscal year 2009 (all available for operations and maintenance).
