§2906 Inspection of agency records

Title 44 › Chapter CHAPTER 29— - RECORDS MANAGEMENT BY THE ARCHIVIST OF THE UNITED STATES AND BY THE ADMINISTRATOR OF GENERAL SERVICES › § 2906

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

The Archivist or the Archivist’s designee may look at any federal agency’s records and record‑keeping programs. The goal is to suggest improvements and to decide if records are worth keeping. Agency officers and employees must fully cooperate. Records that are legally or security‑restricted can only be inspected under rules the Archivist makes and with permission from the agency head or the President. If an inspected record is part of a “system of records” covered by section 552a of title 5, the Archivist must treat and keep it as a system record and follow subsections (b), (c), and (i) of that law. The Archivist must obey all other federal laws and their penalties. The Administrator or the Administrator’s designee may similarly inspect agency mail processing to suggest improvements, and agencies must cooperate.
