Title 44 › Chapter CHAPTER 29— - RECORDS MANAGEMENT BY THE ARCHIVIST OF THE UNITED STATES AND BY THE ADMINISTRATOR OF GENERAL SERVICES › § 2912
The Archivist must create rules telling federal agencies how to preserve electronic messages that are official records. At minimum, the rules must require agencies to capture, manage, and keep those records under the records-disposition rules in chapter 33, make them easy to find with electronic searches, and set timelines so agencies comply as quickly as practicable. When possible, the rules should also cover other electronic records. The Archivist must review and update the rules from time to time.
