Title 46 › Subtitle Subtitle II— - Vessels and Seamen › Part Part G— - Merchant Seamen Protection and Relief › Chapter CHAPTER 103— - FOREIGN AND INTERCOASTAL VOYAGES › § 10304
Requires a ship’s written work agreement to follow a set form that names the ship and master, describes the voyage (ports or general route and length), and lists each seaman with the wages and food they will get. The agreement must say that crew must act orderly, honest, sober, and do their duties, obey lawful orders from the master or officers, and take care of the ship, its supplies, and cargo whether on board, in boats, or on shore. The master must pay the wages shown and supply food by the posted scale. The form must also say that a seaman who steals or willfully damages cargo or stores will have the loss taken from their wages, and a seaman who claims a skill but is unfit will have pay cut to match the incompetence. A seaman with a complaint must tell the master or officer quietly so it can be handled. Other lawful terms may be added. The agreement must be signed and dated, and if a seaman signs after the ship leaves, a consul, customs officer, or witness must also sign. The form records personal and pay details (time of service, birthplace, age, height, wages, allotments, advances, and similar entries).
