Title 46 › Subtitle Subtitle II— - Vessels and Seamen › Part Part H— - Identification of Vessels › Chapter CHAPTER 123— - NUMBERING UNDOCUMENTED VESSELS › § 12304
Vessels that have a registered number must have a matching certificate of number available for inspection while the boat is being used. The certificate can be digital or a small paper card that fits in a pocket. It is valid for no more than 3 years. If a boat is under 26 feet and is rented or leased to someone for noncommercial use for less than 7 days, the owner may leave the certificate on shore where the boat is kept. If the certificate is not on board, the agency that issued the number can require other identification and rules while the boat is operating. The boat owner must tell the agency that issued the number if they sell or give away any part of their ownership, or if the boat is destroyed or abandoned, within a reasonable time after it happens. The owner must also notify the agency of any change of address within a reasonable time, following the agency’s rules.
