The Secretary of Transportation must keep a system that gives each U.S. vessel its own number and assign one to every vessel. The Secretary can also use signal letters for documented vessels, must record an owner’s chosen name for a documented vessel if approved, and can set other marking rules. A boat maker or owner must attach and keep the assigned number and any other required markings the way the Secretary tells them. A number cannot be reused on another boat. A documented vessel’s name cannot be changed without the Secretary’s approval. No one may alter or fake the required number or markings.
