Title 46 › Subtitle Subtitle II— - Vessels and Seamen › Part Part J— - Measurement of Vessels › Chapter CHAPTER 145— - REGULATORY MEASUREMENT › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - FORMAL SYSTEMS › § 14512
The Secretary must make rules for measuring a vessel’s gross and net tonnage under this part. The rules must give tonnage results that are comparable to the tonnages that would have been assigned under sections 4151 and 4153 of the Revised Statutes as those sections existed immediately before this section was enacted. If the owner or master of a U.S. vessel used in foreign trade asks, the Secretary may add an appendix to the vessel’s register showing measurements of spaces that other countries allow to be deducted from gross tonnage but that U.S. rules do not.
