A person can be rated as an able seaman—offshore supply vessels for work on a vessel under 500 gross tons (as measured under section 14502), or under an alternate tonnage set under section 14302 as prescribed by the Secretary under section 14104, when the vessel supports exploration, exploitation, or production of offshore mineral or energy resources. To qualify, the person must have at least 6 months of deck service on vessels that operate on the oceans or on the navigable waters of the United States, including the Great Lakes.
