Summary

The Secretary can make rules about who counts as a qualified member of an engine department on vessels of at least 100 gross tons, excluding vessels on rivers or lakes (except the Great Lakes). A wiper is an entry-level rating and is not a qualified engine department member. Credentials can be based on a vessel’s tonnage and propulsion, the waters where it operates, or other standards. To qualify, an applicant must be at least 18 years old, have at least 6 months’ related entry service, meet exam or education rules, and be fit in sight, hearing, and physical condition.
