Title 46 › Subtitle Subtitle II— - Vessels and Seamen › Part Part E— - Merchant Seamen Licenses, Certificates, and Documents › Chapter CHAPTER 73— - MERCHANT MARINERS’ DOCUMENTS › § 7315
Graduating from an approved nautical school can count instead of the sea time normally required for certain merchant mariner endorsements. Also, finishing a training program the Secretary approves can replace up to half of the needed sea service time. Different kinds of training count for different amounts. One classroom day counts as 2 sea days. One lab or practical day counts as 4 sea days. One full-mission simulator day counts as 6 sea days. One underway training day counts as 1.5 sea days if the training is part of the approved program, fully completed, and the vessel’s size fits the endorsement. A "training day" means at least 7 hours.
