The Inspector General of the Department of Transportation can review the National Transportation Safety Board’s money handling, property, and business operations — including accounting and internal controls — to see if they follow federal laws, rules, and regulations. The Inspector General must tell the Board Chairman and Congress about problems, give findings and recommendations, and report to Congress from time to time on progress fixing those problems. The Inspector General may use the powers in subsections (a) and (c) of section 406 of title 5. Congress may provide whatever funds are needed to the Secretary of Transportation for the Inspector General’s work. If no funds are provided, the Inspector General and the Board must make a reimbursable agreement to cover the expenses.
