Each State gets $36,000 on the first day of each fiscal year. The money must pay to make or update the State rail plan or to fund certain State-chosen rail projects that meet the law’s rules. States must apply for the money by the first day of the fiscal year, unless Congress hasn’t approved funding — then they have 60 days after approval to apply. The Secretary of Transportation has 60 days to approve or deny. The funds stay available to the State for 3 months after the fiscal year ends; unused or unclaimed money goes to the Secretary for eligible projects.
