Title 49 › Subtitle SUBTITLE VI— - MOTOR VEHICLE AND DRIVER PROGRAMS › Part PART A— - GENERAL › Chapter CHAPTER 301— - MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER III— - IMPORTING NONCOMPLYING MOTOR VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT › § 30142
You can avoid some automatic import rules when you bring a car into the United States for your own use (not to sell it) if the vehicle is imported after January 31, 1990 and you are not one of the people covered by other special rules. To get the exemption you must give a government-set bond, show a written agreement with a registered importer who will make the vehicle meet U.S. safety rules, and certify the vehicle meets required import conditions. You must follow any terms the Transportation Department sets to ensure the car is fixed within a reasonable time after import or else exported (at no cost to the U.S. government) or abandoned to the government. The Transportation Secretary can allow up to 30 extra days to finish the importer agreement.
