The Secretary of Transportation must issue a final rule within 2 years after the law is passed requiring all new passenger motor vehicles under 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight to have a system that alerts the driver to check rear-designated seating positions after the engine or motor is turned off. The alert must give a clear sound and a clear visual warning and may also include a vibration. It must activate when the operator turns off the vehicle. Full compliance must begin on September 1 of the first calendar year that begins 2 years after the final rule is issued.
