Title 5 › Part PART III— - EMPLOYEES › Subpart Subpart B— - Employment and Retention › Chapter CHAPTER 33— - EXAMINATION, SELECTION, AND PLACEMENT › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER VI— - ASSIGNMENTS TO AND FROM STATES › § 3375
Federal agency funds can pay or repay federal, state, or local employees for certain travel and moving costs when they are assigned under this part. That includes travel and per diem to and from the assignment, per diem while at the assignment, approved official travel away from the duty post, moving family and household goods, family per diem to and from the assignment, temporary-quarters subsistence, a small allowance for other moving costs when goods are moved or stored, and nontemporary storage at an isolated location. These payments follow the rules in chapter 57 and sections 5724, 5724a, 5726, and 5742. Most of these payments (except the approved official travel away from the duty post) require the employee to sign a written agreement to finish the whole assignment or serve one year, whichever is shorter, unless the agency accepts a valid reason for leaving. If the employee breaks that promise, the government can recover the money as a debt. The agency head may waive recovery for a state or local employee.
