The Secretary of Energy may stop the Department’s Inspector General from seeing restricted nuclear data, nuclear safeguards information covered by the Atomic Energy Act, or intelligence and counterintelligence as defined in the National Security Act, if the Secretary finds that blocking access is needed to protect the national security or to prevent serious harm to U.S. national-security interests. If the Secretary does this, the Secretary must give the Inspector General a written explanation within 7 days. After getting that notice, the Inspector General must send a statement about the action to the appropriate congressional committees within 30 days.
