Summary

Federal employees cannot take part in political activities while they are working, inside federal offices or buildings used for government work, while wearing a government uniform or badge, or while using a government-owned or leased vehicle. An exception applies to certain staff whose work continues outside normal hours and away from their usual workplace: they may do those political activities only if none of the costs are paid with money from the U.S. Treasury. That exception covers people paid from the Executive Office of the President and presidential appointees confirmed by the Senate with U.S.-based jobs that set foreign or nationwide policy.
