Members of Congress and federal officers and employees must not ask for or take any gift or money from people who are trying to get official action, doing business with their agency, are regulated by their agency, or whose interests could be strongly affected by their official work. Ethics offices for each branch can make rules and allow reasonable exceptions. Under those rules, a gift may be accepted, but never if it is given to influence an official act. Gifts accepted for the United States under other laws are allowed. Employees temporarily assigned from private companies can keep pay and benefits from that company as allowed. Violators face discipline under applicable laws and rules. supervising ethics office — the office or committee that sets ethics rules for your branch of government. officer or employee — an appointed or elected government worker, not a Member of Congress.
