People who get benefit payments for someone else (representative payees) must use the money only for that person. If a payee steals or uses those payments for themselves, the Office will cancel their payee rights and send the payments to a different payee or, if appropriate, to the person who should receive them. Anyone who does this can be fined under Title 18, put in prison for up to 5 years, or both.
