Title 50 › Chapter CHAPTER 52— - RESTITUTION FOR WORLD WAR II INTERNMENT OF JAPANESE-AMERICANS AND ALEUTS › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - ALEUTIAN AND PRIBILOF ISLANDS RESTITUTION › § 4236
The Secretary must pay each eligible Aleut $12,000 from the Fund, in addition to any payment under section 4235, as long as the Fund has money. The Secretary can ask the Attorney General and the Administrator to help find eligible Aleuts who live away from the affected villages; the Attorney General may use the Red Cross and other groups to help. The $12,000 is treated for U.S. tax purposes as damages for human suffering and is not counted as income or resources for the benefits listed in 31 U.S.C. 3803(c)(2)(C). Accepting the payment ends any claims against the United States about the relocation in section 4232(5). Congress may provide whatever money is needed in the Fund to make these payments.
