Title 51 › Subtitle Subtitle VI— - Earth Observations › Chapter CHAPTER 601— - LAND REMOTE SENSING POLICY › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER V— - GENERAL PROVISIONS › § 60142
Keep and manage a long-term archive of land remote sensing data for history, science, and long-term environmental monitoring. The Secretary of the Interior, working with Landsat Program Management, must store, maintain, and update a basic global land remote sensing data set using good archival practices so the data stay safe and can be given to people who ask. The Secretary must start from the data archived on October 28, 1992, plan for future technical and scientific needs (including global environmental change research), consult users and producers, allow duplicate coverage that differs by season, bands, or resolution, and may include raw Landsat, licensee, or foreign-collected data while following section 60146. After any exclusive sales rights end or are given up, data sent to the National Satellite Land Remote Sensing Data Archive become public domain and are provided at the cost of fulfilling requests.
