Title 7 › Chapter CHAPTER 33— - FARM TENANCY › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER III— - LAND CONSERVATION AND LAND UTILIZATION › § 1012a
The Agriculture Secretary may, on application, set aside up to 640 acres of National Forest System land as a townsite in Alaska or the eleven contiguous Western States when the land is next to an established community and transferring it would better serve indigenous community goals than keeping it in Federal ownership. After public notice and a showing of local need, the Secretary may sell the area to a local government for at least fair market value and can require a local ordinance to keep the land under local control and to protect adjacent National Forest lands.
