Encourages research to learn more about farming systems that do six things. They keep and improve soil quality and productivity; conserve soil, water, energy, natural resources, and fish and wildlife habitat; protect surface and ground water quality; protect the health and safety of people in the food and farm system; promote animal well‑being; and increase jobs in agriculture. Key terms used here: sustainable agriculture — has the meaning given in section 3103 of this title. Integrated crop management — a system that combines all controllable production factors for long‑term productivity, profit, and ecological soundness. Integrated resource management — livestock management using an interdisciplinary systems approach for long‑term productive, profitable, and environmentally sound food production. Agribusiness — a producer or organization engaged in agriculture for profit. Extension — has the meaning given in section 3103 of this title. Secretary — the Secretary of Agriculture. State — each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands of the United States, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, or federally recognized Indian tribes. State agricultural experiment stations — has the meaning given in section 3103 of this title. Nonprofit organization — a group with proven capacity in agricultural research or education, experience in sustainable agriculture work, and that qualifies under section 501(c) of title 26.
