Voluntary one-time rider gear study
You may be invited at motorcycle rallies or training events to join a voluntary, anonymous one-time study about how well your helmet, jacket, pants, boots, or gloves fit and how comfortable they are. NHTSA plans to screen about 1,250 riders to enroll 625 participants (125 per motorcycle type), with full participants spending about 30 minutes each; there are no record-keeping costs to respondents.
Estimated respondent time and dollar burden
NHTSA estimates the study will create a total of 340.42 burden hours and an estimated total annual burden cost of $15,520 (with an annual burden cost of $5,034 calculated as total/3). These figures reflect the agency's valuation of respondents' time for screening, partial, and full participation.
Findings and de-identified data published
NHTSA will produce a technical report and make a de-identified data set available to the public; the results will be used to inform NHTSA outreach and education motorcycle safety programs about gear types, fit, comfort, and deterrents to using protective gear.
