40,000 Households Will Be Surveyed

The FDIC will run its National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households as a supplement to the June 2025 Current Population Survey. The survey will contact an estimated 40,000 U.S. household respondents, takes about 9 minutes per person, and the FDIC estimates a total annual burden of 6,000 hours.

Survey Will Measure Unbanked Size and Reasons

The Household Survey will collect information on bank account ownership, reasons households are unbanked, interest in having a bank account, and use of bank and nonbank financial products and services. The survey produces State-level estimates for all 50 States and the District of Columbia and is conducted to meet the Section 7 statutory mandate to estimate the size and characteristics of the unbanked market.
