Inspections Required for Airbus Jets' Overheat Warning Flaws

Published Date: 1/31/2025

Rule

Summary

If you fly or work with Airbus A318, A319, A320, or A321 planes (including the new A321-253NY), this update matters! The FAA found some parts that might miss warning signs of overheating, so they’re requiring inspections and replacements to keep everyone safe. These rules kick in on February 18, 2025, and could mean some maintenance costs but will prevent bigger problems down the runway.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandatory OHDS Inspections and Replacements

If you operate Airbus A318/A319/A320/A321 airplanes (now including the A321-253NY), you must do a one-time special detailed inspection (SDI) of certain overheat detection system (OHDS) sensing elements and replace any affected parts. The AD prohibits installing affected parts, is effective February 18, 2025, and the FAA requires compliance with EASA AD 2024-0196 as incorporated by reference.

Estimated Compliance Costs per Aircraft

The FAA estimates the required one-time SDI costs about 6 work-hours at $85/hour for a total of $510 per product (parts $0). If replacement is needed, an on-condition action is estimated at 1 work-hour ($85) plus $1,645 parts, totaling $1,730 per OHDS sensing element. The AD is effective February 18, 2025.

Applicability Expanded to A321-253NY

The rule revises applicability to include the newly certified Airbus A321-253NY model; the FAA notes there are currently no U.S.-registered A321-253NY airplanes. The AD retains all prior requirements and remains effective February 18, 2025.
