More FAA Flight Rules Refreshed: Business as Usual Aloft

Published Date: 2/3/2025

Rule

Summary

The FAA is updating flight rules for certain airports to keep flying safe and smooth. They’re changing how pilots approach, take off, and avoid obstacles based on new tech and airspace changes. These updates kick in on February 3, 2025, and affect pilots and airports, but won’t cost anyone extra.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Instrument procedure updates at airports

If you fly or operate flights at the listed airports, the FAA is establishing, amending, suspending, or removing Standard Instrument Approach Procedures (SIAPs), Takeoff Minimums, and Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODPs). These changes are intended to keep instrument flight operations safe and efficient and are effective February 3, 2025 (with some specific amendments listed as effective February 20, 2025).

Some procedure changes take effect quickly

Some SIAP, Takeoff Minimum, and ODP amendments may become effective in less than 30 days when safety requires immediate action, while others have an effective date at least 30 days after publication. The rule states the compliance date for each procedure is specified in the amendatory provisions.

Procedure charts available free online

All SIAPs, Takeoff Minimums, and ODPs are available online free of charge. You can register and access them at the National Flight Data Center (nfdc.faa.gov) or obtain copies from the FAA Air Traffic Organization Service Area.

FAA finds minimal economic impact on small entities

The FAA determined this amendment is routine and that the anticipated economic impact is minimal, so it will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities under the Regulatory Flexibility Act. No regulatory evaluation was prepared because the expected impact is minimal.
