Check Britten-Norman gear cycles before March deadline

Published Date: 2/4/2025

Rule

Summary

If you own or operate certain Britten-Norman airplanes, you need to check how many times the landing gear parts have been used and replace any that have reached their limit before March 11, 2025. This rule helps keep the planes safe by preventing worn-out landing gear from causing problems. It might cost some money to swap parts, but it’s all about flying safely and staying legal.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

Replace parts that hit fatigue limits

You must remove from service and install replacement parts for any main landing gear (MLG), nose landing gear (NLG), or associated component that has reached or exceeded its established fatigue life before it accumulates further landings. Replacements must be done before the part accumulates its fatigue-life landings or within the next 30 days after March 11, 2025, whichever is later, and as of March 11, 2025 you may not install any affected part unless its landings are below the fatigue life.

Estimated compliance costs and fleet size

The FAA estimates this AD affects 87 U.S.-registered airplanes. The estimated costs are: $85 to determine landings per airplane; replacing an MLG about $31,360 each; replacing an NLG about $36,360 each; and replacing associated components up to $4,340 each. The FAA estimates total U.S. operator costs in the AD's table (for example, $2,728,320 for MLG replacements and $3,163,320 for NLG replacements).

Check landing counts within 30 days

If you own or operate the listed Britten-Norman airplanes, you must determine how many landings affected landing-gear parts have accumulated within 30 days after March 11, 2025. If the number of landings is unknown, you must calculate it using 3 landings per 1 hour time-in-service (TIS).
