Glider Canopies Ejecting Mid-Tow? FAA Says Fix It Now!

Published Date: 3/4/2025

Rule

Summary

If you own a Schempp-Hirth Duo Discus or Duo Discus T glider, listen up! The FAA found that some glider canopies might pop open during air tows, which is super unsafe. Starting April 8, 2025, you’ll need to fix the canopy locking system to keep your flight safe—so plan ahead and keep your glider flying smoothly without surprises.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Safety fix to prevent canopy opening

The FAA issued this rule because some canopies have opened during air tow, which can cause loss of control. The rule responds to reports including a fatal accident in 2023 and requires modifications intended to prevent the canopy from opening in flight.

Mandatory canopy fix within 12 months

If you own an affected Duo Discus or Duo Discus T glider, you must modify the canopy locking mechanism within 12 months after April 8, 2025 (i.e., by April 8, 2026). The modification must follow the listed Schempp‑Hirth technical notes and includes installing a compression spring, spring washers, and adding or installing a front actuating lever with a magnet and a red mark.

Only specific serial numbers affected

This AD applies only to Duo Discus gliders S/Ns 1 through 422 and Duo Discus T gliders S/Ns 1 through 96. The FAA estimates it affects 34 U.S.-registered gliders, and the AD does not apply to Nimbus models because those do not have an FAA type certificate.
