Published Date: 3/11/2025

Notice

Summary

Starting April 10, 2025, retail stores selling meat and poultry to hotels, restaurants, and similar places will have new dollar limits to keep their exemption from federal inspection. If they sell more than these updated amounts, they’ll need to follow stricter inspection rules. This change helps keep food safe while letting small retailers operate smoothly.

Higher exemption dollar limits for retailers

If you run a retail store that sells meat or poultry to hotels, restaurants, or similar institutions, FSIS raised the calendar-year retail dollar limits that let you stay exempt from Federal inspection to $103,600 for meat and meat products (including Siluriformes fish) and to $74,800 for poultry and poultry products. These new limits apply starting April 10, 2025. You still lose the exemption if your sales to those institutions exceed 25% of your total retail product sales or these dollar limits.
