Proposed changes to flood maps (BFEs & zones)
FEMA proposes changes to Flood Insurance Rate Maps that may add or modify Base Flood Elevations (BFE), base flood depth, Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) boundaries or zone designations, and regulatory floodways for the listed communities. The changes are part of Project 14-05-2835S (Preliminary FIRM date: October 30, 2024) and apply to jurisdictions in Chippewa County, Michigan (for example, Bay Mills Indian Community and the City of Sault Sainte Marie).
Communities must meet NFIP floodplain rules
The Preliminary FIRM and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) reports are the basis for floodplain management measures that a community must either adopt or show evidence of having in effect to qualify or remain qualified for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). These are minimum federal requirements and communities may keep or adopt stricter local rules.
Public review and comment deadline
You can inspect the Preliminary FIRM and FIS reports online at https://hazards.fema.gov/femaportal/prelimdownload and at local Community Map Repositories; current effective maps are at https://msc.fema.gov. Comments on the proposed determinations must be submitted by June 24, 2025 (Docket No. FEMA-B-2513) to the contact listed in the notice.
Appeal process and Scientific Resolution Panel
If you meet the data requirements in 44 CFR 67.6(b), you may request reconsideration (an appeal) of the revised flood hazard information shown on the Preliminary FIRM and FIS report. If FEMA and the community cannot resolve an appeal after at least 60 days of collaborative consultation, the community may request use of a Scientific Resolution Panel (SRP) to review conflicting technical data.
