Repatriation date set

The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has completed an inventory showing human remains representing one Native American individual and one associated funerary object. Those remains and the associated object may be repatriated on or after May 5, 2025; they were collected from state site 42SA20858 (Cottonwood Canyon, AZ) in 1982 and accessioned in 1988.

Specific tribes identified as affiliated

The notice identifies a list of affiliated Indian Tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations connected to the remains, including the Colorado River Indian Tribes; Hopi Tribe; Hualapai Indian Tribe; Kaibab Band of Paiute; Mescalero Apache Tribe; Navajo Nation; multiple Pueblo tribes; Zuni Tribe; and many others named in the notice. Those named tribes are recognized as culturally affiliated for purposes of repatriation.

Who may request repatriation

Written repatriation requests may be submitted by any one or more of the tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations named in the notice, or by any lineal descendant or Indian Tribe/Native Hawaiian organization not named that shows by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. If competing requests arrive, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area must determine the most appropriate requestor; joint repatriation requests are treated as a single request.
