Federal Help Available for Grizzly Conflicts
WS-Montana proposes to continue responding to requests for assistance to protect livestock, property, and human and pet health and safety from grizzly bear conflicts. That assistance can include technical advice, demonstrations, and operational field help (both nonlethal and lethal methods) when requested by a property owner or manager, including government, Tribal, commercial, organizational, or private entities.
Option to End Federal Involvement
One of the five alternatives the EIS will consider (Alternative 5) is to discontinue all WS-Montana involvement in grizzly bear damage management. If selected, WS-Montana would no longer provide the technical or operational assistance it currently offers when requested.
Limits on Lethal Methods Under Consideration
The draft EIS will consider alternatives that limit or sequence lethal methods—for example, providing only nonlethal operational assistance (Alternative 2), requiring nonlethal measures before lethal ones (Alternative 3), or using only nonlethal methods except to protect human health/safety or threatened and endangered species (Alternative 4). These alternatives would change what kinds of field actions WS-Montana could take or recommend.
