Mandatory inspections on certain Boeing 787s
If you operate certain Boeing Model 787-8, 787-9, or 787-10 airplanes, you must perform a detailed visual inspection of all clamshell couplings at door 1 and door 3 lavatories and galleys with a potable water system, consistent with Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2023-08-04. The proposed rule would retain the AD’s inspection requirements and require applicable on-condition actions.
Required replacement with strapped couplings
Boeing developed a design solution that replaces clamshell couplings with couplings that have safety straps, and the proposed AD would require, for certain airplanes, replacing affected couplings with the new design as an on-condition action that would terminate the existing AD requirements. The replacements are mandated where applicable to address the missing safety-strap condition.
Safety improvement for passengers on affected planes
The FAA proposes the AD to address an unsafe condition on certain Boeing Model 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 airplanes by ensuring clamshell couplings at door 1 and door 3 lavatories and galleys have properly installed safety straps. The inspections, replacements, and installation ban aim to reduce the risk caused by missing or incorrectly installed safety straps.
Ban on installing affected couplings
The proposed AD would prohibit installing the affected clamshell coupling parts at the inspected locations on the affected Boeing 787-8, -9, and -10 airplanes. Operators cannot reinstall or place the non‑strapped affected parts at the inspection sites.
