No-Entry Safety Zone During NYE Fireworks
You may not enter the safety zone on the Erie Canal in North Tonawanda from 11:45 p.m. on December 31, 2025 through 12:30 a.m. on January 1, 2026 unless you have permission from the Captain of the Port Eastern Great Lakes. This rule blocks all persons and vessels from entering, transiting, or anchoring in the regulated area during that time.
How to Request Entry Permission
If you need to enter the safety zone, you must get permission from the Captain of the Port Eastern Great Lakes or their on-scene representative. You can request permission on VHF-FM channel 16 or by calling the Sector Eastern Great Lakes Command Center at (888) 230-4703.
Operational Rules for Permitted Vessels
If you are granted permission to be inside the safety zone, you must obey directions from the Captain of the Port or their representative. While inside the safety zone, all vessels must operate at the minimum speed necessary to maintain a safe course.
Advance Notices and Possible Early Reopening
The Coast Guard will give the maritime community advance notice of enforcement by Broadcast Notice to Mariners or other suitable means. If the Captain of the Port determines the zone need not be enforced for the full stated period, the Coast Guard may use a Broadcast Notice to Mariners to grant general permission to enter the safety zone earlier.
