Aberdeen Drawbridge Now Requires a Day’s Notice to Rise
Published Date: 11/6/2026
Rule
Summary
Starting December 7, 2026, the Puget Sound and Pacific railroad bridge over the Wishkah River in Aberdeen, WA, will stay fully closed unless a 24-hour notice is given to open it. No bridge operator will need to be on site anymore, making things smoother for the railroad and boaters. This change helps balance train schedules with river traffic without extra costs or delays.
Analyzed Economic Effects
4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.
Bridge kept closed unless 24‑hour notice
Starting December 7, 2026, the Puget Sound & Pacific railroad bridge at mile 0.1 on the Wishkah River will be kept in the fully closed-to-navigation position. If you need the draw opened, you must request it at least 24 hours in advance by telephone or VHF radio channel 13.
On‑site bridge operator no longer required
As of December 7, 2026, a bridge operator will no longer be required to be on site at the PS&P railroad bridge. The Coast Guard states this change helps balance train schedules with river traffic and reduces frequent cycling of the draw.
New sound signal and removed visibility rule
When the draw is opened or closed, the drawtender must sound one prolonged blast followed by one short blast. The rule removes the prior requirement that, when visibility at the drawtender's station was less than one mile, two prolonged blasts be sounded every minute.
Coast Guard finds no significant small‑business impact
The Coast Guard certified under the Regulatory Flexibility Act that this rule "will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities." Over the last 10 years only one or two vessels annually requested openings and those vessels can continue to request openings with 24-hour notice.
