SEC OKs Trading Options on Crypto Baskets: Wall Street's New Digital Wild West?

Published Date: 4/6/2026

Notice

Summary

NYSE American just got the green light to list options on trusts holding multiple crypto assets, not just one! This means investors can trade options on baskets of popular cryptocurrencies that each meet strict size and market rules. The change kicks in right away and could open up fresh trading opportunities without extra approvals.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

New Options on Multi‑Crypto Trusts

You can trade options on Commodity‑Based Trusts that hold multiple crypto assets on NYSE American. The Exchange is now allowed to list and trade those options, giving investors another way to gain or hedge exposure to those trust shares.

Eligibility Requires $700M Liquidity

Each crypto asset held in a multi‑crypto Commodity‑Based Trust must have an average daily market value of at least $700,000,000 over the last 12 months to qualify. Each crypto asset must also underlie a derivatives contract that trades on a market with which the Exchange has a comprehensive surveillance sharing agreement (including via ISG).

Monthly Monitoring and Possible Suspension

The Exchange will check each crypto asset monthly and may suspend opening transactions in the related options if any crypto asset stops meeting the $700,000,000 average daily market value test over the last 12 months or no longer underlies a derivatives contract trading on a market with a surveillance sharing agreement. This could pause new option trading in those products if criteria are no longer met.

Faster Listings Without Extra SEC Approval

The Exchange may list options on these multi‑crypto Commodity‑Based Trusts without additional Commission approval, allowing listings soon after NYSE Arca lists the underlying trust shares. That speeds up when these options can become available to investors.
