Kaw and Shawnee Eligible for Repatriation

The Kansas State Historical Society has determined that human remains representing at least one individual from Wyandotte County, KS are culturally affiliated with the Kaw Nation (Oklahoma) and the Shawnee Tribe. Those remains may be returned to the identified tribes or to a lineal descendant on or after May 11, 2026; requests must be sent to Dr. Nicole Klarmann at the Kansas State Historical Society (6425 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66615-1099) and claimants not listed must show cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence. If competing requests are received, KSHS will decide the most appropriate requestor before repatriation.
