Return of Seven Native Remains

The Kansas State Historical Society identified human remains representing seven Native American individuals and 278 associated funerary objects. The KSHS determined a cultural affiliation between the associated funerary objects and the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma, and these remains and objects may be repatriated on or after May 11, 2026.

Who May Request Repatriation

Repatriation requests may be submitted by any one or more of the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations identified in the notice, or by a lineal descendant or tribe not identified who shows by a preponderance of the evidence that they are affiliated. If competing requests are received, the KSHS will determine the most appropriate requestor before repatriation, and repatriation may occur on or after May 11, 2026.
