TRICARE childbirth support continues to 2031
The Department of Defense is extending the TRICARE Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration (CBSD) for five years, from January 1, 2027 through December 31, 2031. This extension keeps the demonstration in place so military families can continue to receive services from certified doulas and certified lactation consultants or counselors under the CBSD rules.
Extension allows evaluation for permanent coverage
The extension gives the Defense Health Agency more time to complete the CBSD evaluation and to consider rulemaking that could add some or all CBSD services to the permanent TRICARE Basic benefit. The Department is soliciting public comments (comment period ends May 11, 2026) as part of deciding whether to pursue permanent coverage.
