Pilots Allowed Limited Remote Maintenance

HALO Flight asked the FAA for an exemption to 14 CFR Sec. 43.3(a), 43.3(g), and 135.443(b)(3) so certificated HALO pilots who are not mechanics can perform limited maintenance at remote locations. The petition lists specific tasks pilots would be allowed to do: replace defective safety wiring or cotter keys, replenish hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic reservoir, replace and service batteries, and remove, check, and replace magnetic chip detectors. It would also let those pilots make the required aircraft logbook entries when they perform such maintenance.
