FAA Demands Clearer Exit Signs on Fancy Helicopters

Published Date: 4/15/2026

Proposed Rule

Summary

The FAA wants to make certain Airbus helicopters safer by adding extra safety labels to the sliding door emergency exits because the current instructions aren’t clear enough. This affects many popular Airbus helicopter models and aims to prevent accidents. Helicopter owners and operators should comment by June 1, 2026, and be ready for these changes, which won’t cost much but will boost safety.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Extra Safety Labels for Sliding Doors

If you own or operate an affected Airbus helicopter (for example, Model AS350B series, AS355 series, EC120B, or EC130B4), the FAA proposes you must install additional safety labels with sliding door opening and closing instructions by complying with EASA AD 2025-0159 (dated July 24, 2025) as incorporated into this FAA proposed AD. The label change is intended to ensure proper door operation in an emergency and help prevent injury to occupants.

Estimated Compliance Cost Per Helicopter

If you operate one of the affected helicopters, the FAA estimates installing the new labels will take 1 work-hour at $85 plus $105 in parts, for a cost of $190 per helicopter. The FAA estimates this AD would affect 1,213 U.S.-registered helicopters for a total estimated cost to U.S. operators of $230,470.
